David Evans, Chairman
David has a proven track record in acquiring, integrating and growing businesses in the diagnostic area and in value creation, exemplified by his role at BBI Holdings Plc where he grew the company through acquisition and organic growth, from a value of £4million to a value of £84million in 2007, when BBI was sold to Inverness Medical Innovations Inc. He was Chairman of DxS Limited, which was sold in 2009 for £82million. David was also Chairman of Sirigen Group Limited, an early stage medical technology company that was sold in 2012 to Becton, Dickinson and Company, a global medical technology company. David was also previously Chairman of Immunodiagnostics Systems Holdings Plc, EKF Diagnostics Holdings Plc, Epistem Holdings Plc, Scancell Holdings Plc, OptiBiotix Health Plc and Premaitha Health Plc.
David is currently Chairman of Omega Diagnostics Group Plc.
Jamal Rushdy, Chief Executive Officer
Jamal brings over 20 years of experience in the medical device industry in successful entrepreneurial and high growth public companies. Jamal has extensive commercial and operational leadership experience including leading global orthopedic and biologics product marketing teams at DJO and Tornier (now Wright Medical), as well as a successful track record of building shareholder value through business development transactions. He has helped achieve successful exits for private equity and angel investors as a founding member or senior executive of four medical device companies. Jamal earned an MBA from U.C. Irvine and a BSME from U.C. San Diego.
Hilary Spence, Chief Financial Officer
Hilary has over 30 years' commercial experience in finance across a number of multi-sector businesses. Over her career Hilary has been involved in a number of successful business transformations where her diverse skills have been used to create, financially evaluate and implement growth strategies. Hilary has worked with a broad range of companies from large corporates including Heineken, Vodafone, Motorola and Premier Foods and smaller more entrepreneurial businesses. Most recently Hilary was Interim CFO at the private equity funded Powerleague, where she was integral to the restructuring and transformation of the finance systems.
Hilary is a Chartered Accountant, member of ICAS and has a BA in Business Economics and MBA from Strathclyde University.
Tom Hyland, Chief Operating Officer
Tom has a wealth of experience in the field of collagen chemistry and the development, manufacturing, validation and engineering requirements of collagen-based medical devices. He is a recognised expert in the field as a six sigma black belt, and has played a major role in bringing a number of highly successful collagen-based products to market. Tom has worked with an impressive list of global life science companies, including Johnson and Johnson Wound Management where he was involved in the identification and commercialisation of a series of products which now have global sales exceeding £50m per annum. He was also employed at Microsulis, Intercell, Alere and Invitrogen, in a range of senior operational roles in the areas of Drugs, Diagnostics & Interventional Devices, manufacture scale up and production technology.
Lou Ruggiero, Chief Business Officer
Lou is a performance-driven executive with proven success at all levels of sales and general management in the health care and technology industries. Most recently, Lou served as Senior Vice President of Sales at Pearson Clinical Assessments. Previously, Lou spent 10 years as a senior executive and Board Director in the orthopedic device industry. Under his leadership as Chief Commercial Officer of Hely & Weber Orthopedics and Ossur Americas, the companies posted consistent double-digit revenue growth. As the Chief Sales & Marketing Officer of DJO Global, revenue and share price increased over five-fold. Earlier in his career, Lou served as CEO of Titan Scan Technologies, an early stage B2B company focused on medical device sterilisation and bio-agent remediation. In addition, Lou served in various leadership roles of increasing responsibility with GE Healthcare, where he earned his Six Sigma Certification. Lou is a summa cum laude graduate of St. John's University, where he majored in Interpersonal Communication and Political Science, and earned an MBA from Northwestern University Kellogg Graduate School of Management. He is also completing a Doctoral degree in Organizational Leadership from Creighton University.
Geoff Bennett, Non-Executive Director
Geoff co-founded Southern Lights Biomaterials in 2003 and as CEO was responsible for guiding the company to a dominant position in biomaterials and regenerative medicine. He has financial and operational experience including previously holding the chief financial role at three publicly traded Canadian companies (Pelorus Navigation Systems Inc., Circle Energy Inc. and Solid State Geophysical Inc.) as well as experience of early stage enterprises specialising in technology commercialisation, such as InnerVision Medical Technologies Inc. where he held the position of COO. Geoff holds a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Alberta and is a member of the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants.
Malcolm Gillies, Non-Executive Director
Malcolm is a director in several private companies mostly involved in the healthcare area including Antoxis and Ohmedics. He was a non-executive director of Aircraft Medical, which was acquired by Medtronic for £72 million in November 2015. He has previously held positions as a non-executive director in public companies and was company secretary at Axis-Shield Plc. He has a background as a corporate finance lawyer, having been a senior partner with Shepherd+Wedderburn.
Chris Brinsmead CBE, Non-Executive Director
Chris Brinsmead has worked in the Pharmaceutical industry for over thirty years, holding executive leadership roles within ICI and AstraZeneca. He was President of the ABPI from 2008 to 2010. He is currently on the Board of UDG Healthcare plc and The Wesleyan Assurance Society, having previously held Board positions at Domino Printing Sciences plc, Cambian Group plc and Kinapse Ltd. He also chairs two private companies, Proveca Ltd and Bamburgh Capital Ltd. Chris is a Member of Council at Imperial College and an advisor and champion on Life Sciences for the UK Government. He was appointed a CBE in January 2015. Chris Brinsmead holds a BSc in Civil Engineering from Nottingham University and an MSc in Business Science from Manchester Business School.
